Why Great Moms Make Great Businesswomen

The truth is that no matter how old we are, as long as our mothers are alive, we want our mother.
— Goldie Hawn

The History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is upon us. While reflecting on this month’s topic, I started thinking about different types of mothers and the role this annual celebratory day imparts on our lives. According to an interesting video at History.com, 109 years ago, in 1908, “The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.” However, she was appalled in 1916, when it became commercialized. She spent the rest of her life trying to have it removed from the federal calendar.

A Million Faces of Mothers

It’s certainly a good thing that didn’t happen, for mothers deserve a day of acknowledgment in whatever shape that is: a phone call, card, gifts, or a hug. There are countless types of mothers. The most common classifications tend to be ‘working moms’ or ‘stay-at-home’ moms.

In addition, there are a multitude of descriptions for great moms: single moms, adoptive moms, foster moms, moms without custody, moms caring for a child with disabilities, moms of angels, moms of an addict, helicopter moms, tiger moms, moms of veterans, surrogate moms, and on and on. Those are just some ‘titles’ that hardly offer an inkling of the love, heartache, comfort, frustration, peace, loss, joy, work, laughter, sacrifices, snuggle times, sleepless nights, playtimes, endless worry and pure happiness that comes with being a mom.

But, what skills are required to be a great mom? If you ask any of your friends, they will probably have similar answers. Interestingly, there are many attributes of being a mom that segue, compliment and support our roles as businesswomen. What is the translation? Here are our top 7!

When we are in the thick of it, it is sometimes hard to realize the good we do as moms. Some inspiring and hopeful quotes from famous people about the impact on their lives from their moms were shared in an article at Quickbase.com and a list from Julia Ma, in “The Cut.” From George Washington to Michelle Obama and Sheryl Sandberg, and many more, they beautifully express their mom’s goodness.

“When my mother took her turn to sit in a gown at her graduation, she thought she only had two career options; nursing and teaching. She raised me and my sister to believe that we could do anything, and we believed her.” — Sheryl Sandberg

“You better be the president of your company or the lead singer of your band or the boss — because you don’t like being told what to do.” And she was totally right. – Stevie Nicks

Moms are usually always right. It’s an inherent knowledge they have. It must be the eyes in the back of their heads. No matter which category, emotion, or attribute you have as a mother, you are a great mother! Happy Mother’s Day!
